Purpose: [目的]
These organizations are registered in the United States, although some members of these organizations reside outside of North America. Despite the fact that these organizations have different disciplinary emphases, they share the common aim of studying and promoting China studies in the world, especially in the United States and in Greater China. In establishing such an umbrella organization, USCS serves the purpose of better promoting China studies globally.
Mission: [使命]
The mission of USCS is primarily that of promoting academic information sharing, consultation, and possible coordinated projects of China studies among the member organizations in the United States as well as in the rest of the world.
Organization: [组织]
- The membership of this council is organizational. The Council of USCS is made up of one representative from each of these organizations.
- These representatives are appointed by the chief executive officers (CEO) of the organizations, that is, the “presidents or “coordinators,and the governing bodies, i.e., the boards or steering committees. They report directly to the respective CEOs and to the respective governing bodies.
- The Council chairman is elected by the representatives from these organizations and serves a terminal two-year term. Ideally, the Council chairmanship rotates among the representatives of these organizations.
- The Council should not interfere in the internal affairs of the participating organizations and institutions.
- Each of the participating organizations is expected to pay an annual fee of $100 on a voluntary basis.
- USCS admits new members with the consent of the majority of these organizations. Once admitted, the new member organizations enjoy the same privileges as the founding members.
- USCS will register in the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a non-profit organization.
Functions: [功能]
- The Council collects information from the member organizations and from the affiliated institutions.
- The Council issues a USCS newsletter periodically and maintains a website in which all member organizations websites and the participating academic institutions will be linked. The website is maintained by somebody appointed by the Council.
- The Council coordinates consultations about academic activities and fund raising among member organizations. The funds raised serve the sole purpose of USCS coordinated academic activities.
- If funding is available, the Council may meet every year at a place that is desirable to all, such as the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies.
- As USCS becomes more established at a later stage, the Council may organize joint projects such as research projects and conferences participated by all, or some, of the member organizations. The participation by the USCS member organizations in the collaborated projects organized by the Council is entirely voluntary.
- The USCS Council may invite experts in various fields as resource persons, such as legal counsels in the United States, in mainland China, and in Taiwan.
- The Council chairman is expected to appoint a secretary/treasurer. The financial record is subject to scrutiny by all member organizations and affiliated institutions.
